ELMO'S SONG

Elmo is a Muppet. On the children's television show Sesame Street he is the red, furry red monster with large white eyes and a big orange nose. Elmo appears for the last 15 minute segment of Sesame Street, Elmo's World, which is aimed at an audience of toddlers.

Elmo's puppeteer is Kevin Clash, who uses falsetto to produce his voice. Kevin Clash (pictured on the right and born September 17, 1960) is a voice actor and puppeteer whose characters include Elmo as well as Baby Sinclair, Clifford, Splinter and Hoots the Owl. He currently works for Sesame Street as Muppet Captain and co-executive producer.

In the autumn of 2006, Clash released an autobiography entitled 'My Life as a Furry Red Monster'.

Elmo is self-described as three-and-a-half years old and always refers to himself in the 3rd person. Sesame Street staff writer Nancy Sans once described Elmo's origins as follows, "There was this extra red puppet lying around and the cast would pick him up sometimes and try to create a personality, but nothing seemed to materialize."

Sans continues that "...one day [in 1984], Kevin Clash, a talented puppeteer, raised him up and brought energy and life into Elmo and from that day forward we would all write for Elmo. Kevin's performance inspired the writers to develop Elmo's character. John Tartaglia, Matt Vogel and Jim Martin have all been secondary performers for the character, providing movement for Elmo's arms and legs, particularly in green-screen shots.

On "Elmo's World," Elmo is accompanied by his goldfish, Dorothy, and the Noodle Family—Mr. Noodle, his brother (known as Mr. Noodle's brother, Mr. Noodle), and his sister (known as Mr. Noodle's sister, Ms. Noodle). Elmo lives in an apartment with his mommy, his daddy, and, in some storybooks, a sister named Daisy. Above is a picture of Elmo with his parents.
